Middlewich Folk and Boat Festival postponed to September 2020
Middlewich Town Council are delighted to announce that the Middlewich Folk and Boat Festival 30th Anniversary will now take place from Friday 25th to Sunday 27th September 2020.
The Covid19 Pandemic has sadly meant that a large number of events planned for this summer, both locally and nationally, have been cancelled. Having spoken to local businesses in Middlewich, the Town Council were very keen to investigate postponement of the event before considering cancellation.
Lisa Benskin, Town Clerk advised “We are all aware that that the majority of businesses in Middlewich are suffering at the moment and the message from the usual fringe venues was that anything we could do to make Folk and Boat happen in 2020 would be welcomed by them.
The Council is well aware, that the guidance from the Government may mean that we might still have to cancel this year’s festival, but the Council would like to do all it can to hold the event if possible.”
Sadly, Folk and Boat Festival’s 30th Anniversary event cannot take place on the original dates of 17th to 21st June; both because of the high likelihood that events and gatherings of people will still be restricted and because Cheshire East Council have advised that no events will be given permission to take place on their land until at least the start of July.
Cllr Jonathan Parry, Chairman of the Folk and Boat working group said “There are lots of small businesses that rely on the Folk and Boat festival each year. This year they need that boost more than any other time! We want to give the festival the best chance possible of happening.
We know that it cannot take place in June but in line with lots of other festival and gig postponements, we feel that late September is the latest and best time to give our town the
festival which will be very welcome after this lockdown”
The Council hope that this date is far enough away for current restrictions to be lifted enabling the event to go ahead before the weather gets too autumnal! But of course, if the Government restrictions are still in place then the postponed event will be cancelled, and we will resume the festival in 2021. The Council will not be spending further funds on the event at this time in light of the risk of September cancellation, and any contract terms agreed will include clauses to protect Council funds should the event ultimately be cancelled for 2020.
An External Committee meeting will be held on a monthly basis from 4th June 2020 by Video Conferencing to review the latest advice and the decision to postpone the festival. The public will be able to attend the meeting as details as to how will be provided on the meeting agenda, which will be published on the Council’s website (www.middlewich.org.uk) in the usual way.
We are very pleased to advise that the Friday 25th September – 30th Anniversary Concert will still feature our headline act the superb Scouting for Girls plus special guests to be
80s fans will still be able to enjoy their Party night on Saturday 26th September featuring China Crisis and Electro 80s with an additional special guest to be announced.
The lineup for the free event on the Sunday remains unchanged with The Commitments, Thrill Collins and Old Time Sailors able to attend the re arranged date.
Whilst we are confident that we can still provide 95% of the original programme, sadly Lucy Spraggan and Toyah are unavailable in September. We hope that they will be able to perform at Folk and Boat 2021 instead, subject to their availability.
If you purchased tickets for Friday or Saturday night these will be automatically transferred to the new dates and you need take no further action. We look forward to celebrating the
end of the current lockdown with you all!
If you haven’t yet bought your tickets, the box office reopens at 12 noon on Friday 24th April.
There are limited residents’ tickets left which offer a 20% to 30% discount on the full ticket prices for Middlewich Residents. But once they are gone….they are gone!
Go to www.middlewichfabfestival.co.uk/ to secure yours.
We hope that the majority of people will be happy for their tickets to be transferred to the new dates, but we do understand that due to the current crisis, people’s financial
circumstances may have changed or they may have particularly wanted to see Toyah or Lucy Spraggan. If you fit into this category and want to receive a refund for your tickets, please email firstname.lastname@example.org and we will process your request as quickly as possible.
If the event does ultimately have to be cancelled, ticket holders will be offered the options of retaining their tickets for the 2021 event or receiving a refund.
